Description

The following lists have been compiled in order to provide free and easy access to data regarding the population of people of color in Unicoi County, Tennessee in the years 1880, 1900 and 1910.

Although Appalachia has long been considered a (nearly) exclusively white space in popular American imagination, just the opposite was, and is, true. Unicoi County was created out of Carter and Washington Counties of Tennessee in 1875.

On May 19th, 1918, after the lynching of Thomas Devert, the entire Black population of Unicoi County was forcibly expelled.

Here are the census populations in the years after the formation of the county until 8 years previous to the ethnic cleansing to provide some context of the scope and names of the county's Black families.
