LETTER
while ago, I was rushed from home not know
ing how long I would be gone. And after they
ran some tests, my sons were told my mind was
permanantly at rest. For some time they thought I didn't
have long, and then they saw that they were wrong. I proved
to them and everyone else, I had something else to do before
I rest. I had the need to see my home and make sure they
would carry on. I had to see it for myself and not take the
word of someone else. On Tuesday morning, an Angel was
on my shoulder telling me to "Come on over." I told her that
I wasn't ready, just yet. She said, "Okay, I'll give you until
sunset". I wanted to let my people know that I was happy to
be at home, not in a hospital to die alone. I want to put your
mind at rest, I am at peace, I'm at my best.

EWELL ELIZABETH STEWART, age 66, of
Newport, Tennessee passed away on Tuesday,
October 20, 2009 at her home. She was preceded in death
by her parents, Mary (Je,Mie) Stewart; son Andre Stew
art; daughter, Marie Stewart; four brothers and SL'C sisters.
Ms. Newell Stewart is survived by two loving sons,
Jerry (Llona HtUkin.1) of Capital Heights, Maryland; and
Lamont (Kanikka) Haskins of Waldorf, Maryland; grand
children, Angeline and Andrea Richardson of Washing
ton, D.C.; Daymon, Jerald and Elexus Haskins all of
Capital Heights, Maryland; and Aje Haskins of Waldrot
Maryland; step-granddaughter, Sophia Cooper of Capital
Heights, Maryland; sisters, Delia Stewart, Mamie Elliott
both of Newport, Tennessee; and Anna (Henry) Cofield of
Washington, D.C.; one loving brother, Charles Stewart of
Newport, Tennessee; and a host of other relatives, nieces
and nephews that truly loved her.

ELIZABETHTON- Residents'of South Hills Estates got a surprise visit Thursday afternoon.

knocked on doors and greeted
e,ach resident of the public housing development with a smile and
two bags of groceries.
The symbolism of blacks giving
food to poor white people was not
lost on Elder Ronnie W. Collins,
who is senior pastor of Spirit and
Truth Full Gospel Baptist Church
in Kingsport.
Collins knows that poor people
have the same needs, whatever
their race or beliefs. That is why
he started a program called My
Brother's Keeper. The program
distributes food to a different poor
neighborhood every month.
He and his congregation have
distributed 80,000 pounds of food
in Kingsport, Johnson City, Elizabethton, Knoxville, Nashville,
Roanoke, and they are headed to
Dayton, Ohio, next.
In ministering to the poor in
each town, Collins is gently chiding the larger churches in these
communities. He hopes they will
become more concerned with
helping their neighbors and less
with spending on brick and mortar for a larger church building.
"We don't even have a place to
store our food, but the money we
receive is going to the poor," said
Collins. He quoted Jesus: "In as
much as you have done it unto the
least of my brethren, so you have
done it unto me."
He hopes to build up a network
of My Brother's Keepers partners
to reach his goal of feeding 5,000
people per month in the region.
He said it could be done if 1,000
partners were to donate $4 per
month.

:J<e most summer days, but G. V. had not answered the phone.
i e had rec~ived another more important call on juiy 13:'\ a

Green Venton Curry was born December 29, 1906, in
ndianapolis, Indiana to Ezra and Kate Curry. He was the
Jldest of eight children, five of whom have preceded him in
..Ieath.
i\t an early age he confessed Christ and was very active in
church . Green was educated in Kentucky schools.
He
3racluated high school and college with a BS degree from
l\entucky State College in 1936. It was at Kentucky State, that
he met Susie Lee Burbridge and they were married on January
2, 1932, for 59 years. He actored and careci ;ur .Susie, who
became ill late in their marriage. From this union, three sons,
were born, William Gilbert (who died in infancy), Horace
Venton and Alexander Frazier. He was a loving father, who
never complained and always encouraged his sons to do their
best.
He was an active member of three churches during his
lifetime; First Baptist Church in Glasgow, Kentucky; Mt. Olive
Baptist Church in Jenkins, Kentucky; and Zion Baptist Church
here in Louisville, Kentucky. He served the Lord in various
capacities including deacon at his home church in Glasgow.
Here at Zion he was a member of the December Month Club
and regularly attended Sunday School.
He was a life member of Kentucky S tate University Alumni
Association and served as a former K.S. U. Regent. G.V. was a
classroom teacher and high school principal retiring after 43
years of dedicated service from the Louisville Public School
System in 1973. He was a Simmonite and a Mason.
G.V. leaves to cherish his memory, his t:vJo sons, Horace
\Ienton, Sr. and A. Frazier;· two sisters, Fannie Ivery and
· Harrett Pennick of Ca mpbellsville, Kentucky; two daughters-inta w, Cheryl a11d Carla; fo ur grandch.;!-::-:::·, "?•Nendolyn,

Athens, Calhoun, Etowah Niota and Riceville are the respective cities that make up McMinn County and they all have a rich Black history. This collection is particularly made up of ephemera, photographs and newspaper clippings relating to Black life and worship in Calhoun. Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church is a focal point of worship for Black community members in Calhoun, TN. The community resident experts we collaborated with provided an array of materials but recognized that some key figures were not represented. Special mention of husband and wife Lue Fancy Kimpson, born in Flatrock/Griffin, GA, and Albert Simpson, born in Summit, TN who purchased the land where Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church is currently located. Other remarkable members of the community are longtime church clerk Nora Viola Cook Wood Triplet, Sunday School teacher Alberta Johnson Cansler, and former head deacon Alfred McClarey along with his wife Eva Douglas and mother Louisa Douglas. The church is important to the community. Another community pillar is the ability of residents to maintain generational landownership. Notably, Gussie Farmer, who would allow Calhoun newcomers to rent or buy land in order to get settled. Trim Adair was another prominent land owner that comes to resident experts' minds when thinking about the history of McMinn County and Calhoun.

A Black women softball team, the Headhunters team was organized after a paird of Black players were taken off a local team. Terry Boyd and Ricky Gillespie were approached and consented to coach. This collection contains materials related to Middlestown Consildated Rosenwald School. There are ephemera, student portaits and commencement programs.
"“Middletown Consolidated School, which was located on KY 595 in Madison County, KY, offered the only educational opportunity for African American students from Berea and southern Madison County, serving as a grammar school from 1927-1963. It was jointly funded by citizens of Berea, Berea College, and the Julius Rosenwald Foundation. Its first and only principle was Robert Henry Clay Mitchell Blythe.
Berea College deeded four acres to the Madison County Board of Education with a clause recalling the land if it ceased to be used for educational purposes; the College also donated playground and other equipment. Students from Berea College came to Middletown Consolidated School to do student teaching and observe the teaching staff. The school also was an outlet for service organizations, including the YMCA, was a Community Center, and acted as a hub for African American community activities. Construction funds came from the sale of three Colored schools: Fee Street, Glades, and Farristown; the work was done by members of the African American community.
The Middletown Consolidated School was no longer used for educating elementary school children after the integration of Madison County elementary schools in 1963, but it continued to be used by the community as a Central Community Center, served as a Head Start site, and was later renovated for use by the Berea College Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate(GEAR UP) Programs and subsequently as Partners for Education headquarters. A historical marker was placed on the building to honor its former role as the Middletown Consolidated School. The Boys & Girls Club of Madison County was also located on the site.” (Mitchell, Sharyn).

where he sang in the choir, served as a trustee and at
the time of his death he was serving as Chairman of the
Deacon Board.
Mr. Dawson loved to pray and if he
could be here today, he would say:
