Collins is hoping the theme
of celebrating the legacy of Dr.
King ·will bring all cultures to-·
gether.
"We no longer want this to be
a single group march, but an inclusive group of organizations
coming together in honor of the
legacy Dr. King left," said
Collins. "We're going to put
forth an effort of diversity and
unity."
Kingsport Tomorrow is helping to get the ball rolling.
Leisa Jenkins, director of the
organization, said marches and
speeches about perceived
racism was an idea that the organization was uncomfortable
promoting.
But she said the idea of a pa. rade with a theme about being
one community despite differences among individuals is an
event that would fit with this
year's community unity worship
service and associated events.
"If there is sufficient interest
in the community to have a parade, then we certainly want to
support it," said Jenkins. "We
want to reach across those barriers and celebrate those things
that bind us."
· Collins and Jenkins said they
hope bands from area schools,
organizations and individuals
will step up and enter a car,
. float or other exhibits.
"We encourage people from
all cultu;res to participate,"
said Collins, adding that youth
groups, ·fraternities and other
youth organizations are invited
and encouraged to participate.
"They are our future," he
said.
· A service project is also tentatively planned for after the
parade.
"We ask all goodwill individuals, groups and organizations
to do an. act of love by participating in a service event on the
afternoon of Jan. 14 in honor of
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr."
Collins said.
Anything from feeding the
poor to giving time to the elderly to visiting hospitals, jails and
prisons is urged; he said. My
Brother's Keeper will be distributing turkeys and canned
goods to ·some 50 families.
"Love is action," Collim
said. "Dr. King challenged us tc
do more than j1,1st talk or continue to be silent onlooker>
while we see those around u>
hurting."
The parade is scheduled to
start at noon on Jan. 15 at the
intersection of Sullivan and
Main streets and will end
across from City HalL
"This is not a day off, but a
day of caring," said Collins1
"We can't just talk aboul
racism, we have to do something about it."

Vandals hit Kingsport ·park
$2,000 worth of damage reported
By BECKY CAMPBELL
and MATTHEW LANE
Times-News Staff Writers
KINGSPORT- Vandals left their
mark this weekend at a city soccer
park, painting racial and religious
slurs on the field and bathroom
walls, and they may have taken
some telling evidence with them.
According to police, one or more
persons broke into a supply shed at
Heritage Park between 5 p.m. Saturday and 8' a.m. Sunday to get paint
park officials use to line soccer
fields, then used it to paint up the
fields and facilities.
Jon Schneider, Kingsport Youth
Soccer Association coaching director, said the paint used is not easily
removed from the user's hands and
can take several days to wear off.
"They kicked in the whole front
of the aluminum shed, and there
were pentagrams on the field. They
wrote 'Satan' and '666,' " Schneider
said. "But they were pretty illiterate
because they wrote 'anti-chris.'
"Either they were in a hurry or
they couldn't spell."
Ronnie Collins, pastor of Spirit
and Truth Full Gospel Baptist
Church, said he was unaware of the
racial epithets but said it's no reason for violent retaliation.
"Our response must be love," he
said. "We should not stoop to calling
other races names. It's time to pray.
We know racism exists. We must
take one step at a time together to
see this come to an end."
Schneider said there was about
$2,000 worth of damage to the park.
Several goals and field liners
were also damaged.
Police said they have no suspects.
·
"One of our past presidents was
on his way to church and was driving down Riverport Road and saw
the vandalism," Schneider said.
Graffiti was spray-painted on the
shed, bathroom, soccer field and
several goals, he said.
In addition to the vandalism, police said a pendulum header and
cooler were stolen. The spray paint
cans were taken into evidence for
fingerprinting. ,
'I\vo city workers were called in
to help eight others clean up the
vandalism. Schneider said the
cleanup took about 3-Y:! hours.
Anyone with information should
call the Kingsport detective division
at 229-9429.

lder Ronnie Collins leads the March for Justice Saturday in Kingsport.
KINGSPORT- Elder Ronnie Collins believes that injustice for one is injustice for all.
Collins conveyed this message to a sma]l group of local
citizens who gathered at the
Kingsport Justice Center Saturday evening to participate in
the "March for Justice."
Organized by the Tennessee
and
Virginia
Fellowship
-
Elder Ronnie Collins
Against Racism, Collins said
Saturday's prayer vigil and
march is in conjunction with
the National March for Justice
to denounce police harassment, brutality and racial persecution.

"What we're trying to say is
there is a lot of police brutality, police harassment, minority
profiling, and questionable
murders," Collins said. "As we
go through this country, we're
looking for justice, not special
treatment, just justice."
Thirty-one years ago today,
civil rights leader Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr., was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., and
the question remains of, "how
far has America come?"
Collins said.
"We've still got the same
stuff going on," he said: "But
now it's starting to make headlines because of the Diallo
case ... and those things have to
stop."
Collins is referring to
Amadou Diallo, a 22-year-old
street vendor from Guinea
with no criminal record, who
was shot 19 times Feb. 4 by
l.members
of
an
elite
treet-crime unit looking for a
rape suspect. The shooting has
led tq months of protests, and
the indictment of the four officers on charges of second-de'_g.ree murder.

• "If I had shot a white man 41
tinies and hit him 19, they
wouldn't be talking about second degree murder ... I woulq
be put to death," Collins said.
"But it's all different in America when it's whites perpetrating things on blacks, and that's
what we're trying to say."
Collins believes America
has not come as far as it should
over the years. Dr. King's
dream has not been realized
because we have not become
brothers and sisters, he said.
Collins made reference to
problems that still exist at local high schoots, to the February vandalism of heritage, park
where racial and religious
slurs were spray painted on
the soccer fields and bathrooms, and to his own experience with local police.
"Being pulled over by
Kingsport police because a
light is out," he said. "It turns
out there was nothing wrong
with the light ... Court threw it

Powerful couple in ministry: Rev. Dr. Richard and Rev. Dr. Helen Styles.
owerful Couple in Ministry:
ev. Dr..Richard &
Rev. Dr. Helen Styles''
scripture and lead by the Holy Spirit to impact
the world. .The church must abandon being
politically correct and take a biblical correct
stand on the issues of sin, evil and world affairs.
If it is to be a reckoning force in the world, it will
need to change from business as usual and take a
radical stand for the truth of the word, justice for
all its members and biblical righteousness in
every life.
Rarely has a town been blessed with a couple
who is as dynamic as that of Rev. Doctors
Richard and Helen Styles. They have lived in
Burlington, North Carolina from 35 years and
have been pastoring First Baptist Church for the
same amount of time. They have been married
for 40 years and will be celebrating another
anniversary on June 11th.
The Styles have two children, Richard W.
Styles, Jr. and Helene Rishae Styles-Bunn. Each
child has a child of their own, Wreayon Slade
age 14 and Mak.aya Bunn age 7.
The Styles have favorite scriptures: His being,
Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through
Christ which strengthens me" and hers is Psalms
34:1-3, "I will bless the Lord at all times: His
praise shall continually be in my mouth. My
soul shall make her boast in the Lord. The
humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
O'Maginfy the Lord with me, and let us exalt His
name together".
Rev. Dr. Richard Styles Sr. has served as a
Pastor to three churches, Tupper Memorial
Baptist in Raleigh, NC, Star of Bethel Baptist
Church in Hendersonville, NC and First Baptist
Church-Apple Street in Burlington, N.C.
Rev. Dr. Helen Styles is a Retired Educator
and Administrator of 26 years from the
Alamance-Burlington School System. Before
that she served as an Eligibility Specialist with
the Henderson County Department of Social
Services.
The Styles met in a Thursday night prayer
meeting on the University campus of Shaw
University in September 1968. This should
encourage us all to believe in prayer and what
better place to meet than in a prayer meeting!
Dr. Richard Styles states that his biggest
challenge is to be the Pastor that God wants him
to be. Dr. Helen Styles stated that her biggest
challenge is to rise above the limitations that
have been placed on her spiritually and spiritual
growth by mankind.
Dr. Richard Styles' greatest reward is leading
people to accept the Lord Jesus Christ. Dr.
Helen Styles' greatest reward is witnessing the
changes God is making or has made in the lives
of men and women she has mentored, taught or
served.
They both agreed that the thing that keeps
- their marriage together is the grace and mercy of
God. "Our love and faitli in each other and our
faith in God's power to keep us together."
Dr. Richard Styles' favorite quote is "There is
nothing to fear, but fear itself', Dr. Helen Styles'
quote is "I believe I can fly. If I can believe it, I
~can achieve it".
· Mentors are important in any relationship.
They both have two. Dr. Richard Styles' being
Mr. William Barns of Waterbury, Connecticut
and Rev. William H. Stockley of Kingsport,
Tennessee. Dr. Richard Styles stated that his
father died when he was 14 years old and Mr.
Willie Barns become a substitute father for me.
24
Rev. Dr. Richard & Rev. Dr. Helen Styles
It was because of him that I learned how to be a
young man. It was he who raised money for me
to go to college. It was he who gave me atherly
advice when I needed it.
Dr. Richard Styles stated that when he came
out of seminary, Rev. William H. Stockley took
him under his wings to lead him and guide him
in the ministry. Rev. Stockley had been Pastor of
Central Baptist Church in Kingsport, Tennessee
for 38 years. His church was a place of peace
and the congregation was still thriving and
growing. I sat literally at his feet and learned
how to be a pastor of integrity.
Dr. Helen Styles' mentors were Mrs. Leola
Allen of Kingsport, Tennessee and Dr. Mildred
Thompson of Collinsville, Virginia. She stated
that Mrs. Leola Allen was her missionary teacher
and leader in her church where she grew up. "It
was she who developed in me the love for
missions and missionary work. Under her
tutelage I learned the importance and the need
for a total commitment to God and a genuine
love for mankind". Her second mentor, Dr.
Mildred Thompson showed her how to be a
woman of excellence in the ministry. A female
minister of integrity who is always well-prepared
to stand before God's people and to declare Jesus
Christ and Him crucified.
Doctors Richard & Helen Styles believe that
making mankind ready for the end time harvest
and making the world ready for the second
coming of Christ should be the direction of the
church in 2008. The present day church must
minister to the whole of mankind leaving no one
and no group behind. It must be instructed by
Dr. Richard Styles wants people to know that
Jesus is everything and all they need. Dr. Helen
Styles wants people to know that Jesus came into
this world to save sinners like you and I. He has
no respect of persons. He loves us all equally
an He expect u all equally to live Holy and
sanctified lives. It doesn't matter who you are or
what you have done; Jesus gave His life in order
that you may be saved.
His favorite songs are "Great is Thou
Faithfulness Lord Unto Me" and "How Great
Thou Art". Hers are "I Never Would Have Made
it Without You" and "Jesus, You are the Center of
My Joy".
The one thing he is passionate about is
preaching the word of God; she is passionate
about leading men, women, boys and girls to the
saving knowledge of Jesus and His Love.
His hobbies are reading, walking and writing;
hers are teaching, reading, cooking and
fellowshipping.
Dr. Richard Styles encourages himself through
praying and reading God's Word. "I believe
God's Word is the answer to every situation."
Dr. Helen Styles encourages herself by reading
the Word of God to see what it says about her
situation and her dilemma. "Then I apply God's
promises and decrees to my life. Next, I sing a
song that encourages my soul. Finally, I will
listen to my heart and mind to see what God has
to say".
God continues to bless Burlington and
Alamance County in many ways. Two of these
ways are Doctors Rev. Richard & Helen Styles.
If you want to attend the services or sit under this
dynamic leadership contact the church at 336227-2542.
