Wolvering Spotlight. George Clem High School. Vol I. December 18, 1963. Greene County History Museum,
Education Exhibit.
WOLVERINE SPOTLIGHT
GEORGE CLEM HIGH SCHOOL, DECEMBER 18, 1963
.
EDITION 1
.
THE WOLVERINE SPOTLIGHT'S GRAND PREMIERE
DR. MINCY SAYS:
A more serious problem than
ever before in the history of
our country faces those who
withdraw from public school
before graduation. Indeed, the
same problem is increasing for
those who graduate from high
school. Authorities tell us that
currently there are 800,000 teen·
agers out of school and out of
work. Of course, many of these
unemployed are Negroes, who,
in addition to youth and lack
of skill, have the additional
cross of racial descrimination
to bear.
In spite of discrimination,
however, the same basic factors now seem to be keeping
the Negro teen-ager unemployed that work against the
employment of young people
from any other group. These
factors include lack of education and work skills.
The logical point of attack in
combating this problem is in
the area of educational preparation. This educational prepa·
ration should not necessarily be
in the area of vocational train·
ing, as important as such training is. The basic need before
vocational training is intellectual and attitude development
and development of basic reading, writing, and mathematical
skills. Training in a specific
trade ends in dismal failure
without an ability to --;;ar! and
write.

SIXTH GRADE NEWS
Georgia Mae Barner
There are twenty students in
our class. There are eleven
girls and nine boys. We are
pleased with our new televisions. We can watch our science programs without being
disturbed. Formerly, we had to
watch our programs in the
gymnasium. There are six students who have read over fifteen books, and two that have
read over twenty-five books.
During American Education
Week, we had on display a
model of Egypt - showing the
Nile River and the Arabian and
Libyan Deserts. Much of our
work was on display for our
parents and friends to observe.
We were pleased that a large
number of people visited our
room.
"THANKSGIVING"
Wanda Beard
We have celebrated Thanksgiving Day! Thanksgiving is a
day for thanks and giving.
Thanksgiving reminds me of
a family meeting and a day of
happiness too. I am glad for
the day of Thanksgiving because it comes once a year.
People all over the United
States should take time for a
do.y of thanks to the Lord; and
for the wonders of the world,
and for the food of each day;
because some people do not
have as many things as others;
so, on Thanksgiving Day, let's
give thanks and bless the things
that we have.
THE FIRST DAY OF SNOW
The first day of snow is a
wonderful sight to see. Every
child loves to play in the snow.
They love to ski and they love
to make snowballs. Children
love to play with snow. But
some people don't like their
children to play in the snow
because it gives you a cold and
makes you sick. In some parts
of the country the children
don't have any snow there. The
first day of snow this year was
while we were in s c h o o 1 .
Everybody was so happy we
started looking out the window
instead of looking into our
books. By the time that we got
inside the wet snow was making
feet cold. Oh, oh, here comes
my brother.

Thank you! What beautiful
words they are, for they speak
of the gratitude that is within,
and bless the one who hears
them.
A friend of mine volunteered
to perform a difficult community task involving responsibility
for which he received no payment. He accepted the task because he loved his neighborhood.
In the year that he held the
position, he received many letters of complaint, but only two
letters of appreciation, yes
many words of appreciation
were spoken but only two persons took the time to write
him.
My friend was so impressed
by these two letters that he
took time to seek out each of
the letter writers just to thank
them .
Have you learned the art of
appreciation? One of the kits of
kindness that each person ought
to have in his possession is a
package of " thank you notes."
Send a simple, sincere, "thank
you" note of appreciation to
those who render some service.
If we ever become too busy
to express appreciation to anyone, then we are too busy.

A TRIBUTE TO JFK
Thou, too, sail on, 0 Ship of
State!
Sail on, 0 Union, Strong and
great!
Humanity with all its fears,
With all the hopes of future
years,
Is hanging breathless on thy
fate!
We know what Master laid thy
keel,
What Workmen wrought thy
ribs of steel,
Who made each mast, and sail,
and rope,
What anvils rang, what hammers beat,
In what a forge, and what a
heat
Were shaped the anchors of thy
hope !
Fear not each sudden sound
and shock,
'Tis of the wave and not the
rock;
'Tis but the flapping of the sail,
And not a rent made by the
gale!
In spite of rock and tempest's
roar,
In spite of false lights on the
shore,
Sail on, nor fear the breast the
seal!
Our hearts, our hopes, are all
with thee,
Our hearts, our hopes, our
prayer, our tears,
Our faith bjiumphant o'er our
fears,
Are all with thee-are all with
thee!

Debating Team
Formed
Our principal, Mr. W. H. deLaney, a man very es~n&~y
interested in the fo_mation of
r
scholarly extra-curricular activities has recently formed a debating team. Captain, Jack
Carson, Jr., Robert Mason,
Bobby Black, Gene Maddox,
Tennyson W o o t e n and, of
course, Mr. deLaney as sponsor. We thank Mr. deLaney for
his interest in the students and
we think his plans for overall
school improvement will be successful.

quit.
Life is queer with its twists and
turns,
As everyone of us sometimes
learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had
he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace
seems slowYou may succeed with another
blow.
Success is failure turned inside
outThe silver tint of the clouds of
doubt,
And you never can tell how
close you are,
It may be near when it seems
so far :
So stick to the fight when you're
hardest bitIt's when things seem worst
that you must not quit.
Principal W. H. deLaney and Rn. C. C. Mills at Installation
of Student Council.
